Genuine Trading, Investment and Resalers

Online Trading Markets Beyond Stocks, Forex and Cryptocurrency

There are many markets around the world where individuals can open an online account, buy and sell assets, speculate on price movements, and trade through electronic exchanges or comparable online marketplaces. These markets extend far beyond conventional stock exchanges, foreign exchange and cryptocurrency markets.

This directory identifies alternative trading markets and the platforms through which individuals can access them. It distinguishes genuine trading markets from investment products, crowdfunding, auctions and other asset-purchasing arrangements.

Definition of a Qualifying Trading Market

For inclusion in the main trading directory, a market must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. The underlying asset, instrument or contract has a price that fluctuates according to market conditions.
  2. Individuals can buy and sell, or enter and close trading positions.
  3. Trading takes place electronically through an exchange, brokerage platform, order book or comparable online marketplace.
  4. An individual can register for an account with a platform providing access to the market, subject to applicable eligibility and regulatory requirements.

Markets involving only the purchase of an asset, holding it for a period and eventually selling it privately are not automatically considered qualifying trading markets. Likewise, platforms that only provide investment subscriptions, crowdfunding or auction facilities are classified separately.

Important: An exchange is not necessarily the website where an individual opens an account. For example, CME and ICE operate exchanges, while brokers such as Interactive Brokers provide individuals with trading accounts and access to supported exchange products. Availability, permissions, liquidity, minimum deposits and account eligibility vary between brokers and countries.

17. Specialist Exchange-Traded Markets

Several additional markets have genuine exchange-listed futures and options, but access is generally more specialised than conventional retail commodity trading. The existence of an exchange-listed contract does not mean that every individual brokerage account can trade it.

Wet Freight Derivatives Trade derivatives based on tanker shipping rates for crude oil and petroleum products. ICE Freight, specialist futures brokers

  • Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) – Energy, agricultural commodities, metals, battery materials, emissions and freight futures.

Important Considerations Before Opening Trading Accounts

Not every platform accepts customers from every country. Some offer international accounts, while others restrict access based on residency, identity verification, regulatory requirements or investor qualification.

For example, Interactive Brokers publishes an international list of supported account-opening countries. Saxo, IG and eToro have their own jurisdictional restrictions. Kalshi, betting exchanges and alternative asset platforms also impose geographical restrictions.

The following distinctions should be checked before treating a platform as a genuine trading opportunity:

  • Account registration: Can an individual from the relevant country register and complete identity verification?
  • Trading permissions: Does the account allow the specific commodity, futures contract, bond or other instrument?
  • Order execution: Can the individual place buy and sell orders, close an existing position and trade at changing prices?
  • Market liquidity: Are there enough buyers and sellers to enter and exit positions at reasonable prices?
  • Settlement: Does the platform provide cash settlement, securities transfer, physical delivery or another arrangement?
  • Trading costs: Are there commissions, spreads, financing costs, exchange fees, custody charges or withdrawal fees?

Futures and leveraged derivatives can result in losses exceeding the initial amount deposited. Contracts can also have expiry dates, margin requirements and physical delivery obligations. These characteristics must be understood before trading.

Conclusion

There are numerous online trading markets outside stocks, forex and cryptocurrency. The most established alternatives are commodity futures, precious metals, energy, agricultural products, fixed-income securities and interest-rate derivatives.

There are also specialised electronic marketplaces involving prediction contracts, sports betting exchanges, loan investments, royalties, fractional artwork, collectible securities, fractional property interests and physical goods.

These markets are not all equally liquid or accessible. Some operate continuously during exchange trading hours, others have scheduled trading windows, and some rely on individual buyer and seller matching. Nevertheless, they provide a substantially broader range of online trading opportunities than conventional financial markets alone.

The most important distinction is whether a participant can actually buy, sell or close a position at a changing market price. Merely purchasing an asset, subscribing to an investment fund or participating in an auction does not make it an equivalent trading market.
